Nessa

A sparse rain coated the dirty streets and splattered against the windshield of our car. I sat and stewed over my situation as he sped out of the darkness of the city under cover of the early morning dark. He said we were going to the Malice city. Where the hell was that? And what would they do with me there? I chewed my fingernails to nubs. Was I crazy for trusting him and this whole Malice story?

He’d dropped his hood, and his silver strands of hair shone in the reflection of the streetlights. He made me nervous, but in a belly-fluttering excited way. And he also put me at ease. Whatever part of me recognized him from my past also trusted him. And if I couldn’t trust my past life…who could I trust?

I nibbled on a cookie, wanting to make the dozen I had last since I’d likely never see Mrs. Hernandez again. “Want a cookie?” I asked Lanis. He only shook his head. I shrugged. “Okay, but you’re missing out.”

The rain let up as we rumbled onto the bridge crossing the quarter-mile long Inter River, and I finally began to relax somewhat. I wasn’t quite sure how much longer we had to go but putting Baxint behind us seemed like the right thing to do.

The beginning of the sunrise coated the horizon in streaks of pink and yellow light. I was considering getting some sleep when I glanced up to see a black object obscure the light of the stars for a brief moment. I leaned forward in my seat. “What was that?”

The leather of the steering wheel creaked beneath Lanis’s death grip. He craned his neck to see out the top of the windshield. His slow panning gaze and absolute lack of reaction was the most terrifying. I wanted a word of assurance. Hell, even a curse. But the slow stare out the windshield while his jaw worked beneath his mask was unsettling. My stomach soured.

“Lanis,” I whispered. But I never got to ask a question, because suddenly a solid blow landed to the side of the car. I screamed as the door caved in against my side, and the entire back end of the car spun out. My head hit the window before it whipped to the side as Lanis spun the wheel like a madman to keep us on the road.

We hit the opposite side of the bridge with a crunch. Something warm and wet dripped down my temple. A drop of crimson landed on my sweatpants. I stared at the growing stain as sharp pain sliced into my skull.

Another blow landed to the side of the car, sounding like two gigantic fists. Through the rain-blurred glass, a face came into view—dark red scales, no lips, and a mouthful of jagged teeth. The mouth opened and hissed. Somewhere a distant memory conjured exactly what this creature was. A Moxic.

Terror froze my vocal chords so I couldn’t even scream. I could only stare in horror as the fists banged again, and the glass of my window shattered like a dropped mirror.
